5 Tips for Organizing the Infamous Junk Drawer

Birdseye View of a Messy Junk Drawer Full of Random ItemsIf you’re like many Nelson County renters, you likely have a messy junk drawer (or likely more than one!) somewhere in your house. In fact, even otherwise organized people can have a junk drawer crowded with all types of things. However, if you can’t find something or your junk drawer is overflowing, it should be time to get it organized. The great news is that organizing your junk drawer doesn’t have to be tedious or time-consuming. You’ll need a bit of preparation and a few valuable tips to conquer that junk drawer completely!

1.   Empty and Sort

The first action to successfully getting that junk drawer organized is to take everything out and sort each item into piles. To corral small items, try leaving a clean towel on a flat surface to put your junk drawer goods as you sort. Broken things and trash should go into the waste bin, while other items you simply haven’t used or don’t need any longer can perhaps be donated to a thrift shop. Whatever things you decide to keep should be divided into piles of things to put away at another place and articles to be organized back into the drawer.

2.   Clean Up

While the drawer is emptied, please take a little while to scrub it. If you’ve been collecting junk in the drawer for quite a long now, it may take a little bit of effort to get it carefully cleaned. If dust or grime has piled up in the corners, try putting to use a toothbrush or other small bristle brush to clean those parts.

3.   Put Away

With a clean drawer and your items categorized into piles, it’s time to organize. Basically, sort and put away items that don’t belong in your junk drawer. To do so quite easily, group together objects that are identical or that are part of a specific room. By way of illustration, paper clips, rubber bands, and similar items would be dumped with your other office supplies. Writing utensils can be bunched up all together in a pencil cup and important receipts or documents filed with your other household paperwork.

4.   Create a System

For things that you plan to keep in your junk drawer, consider applying an organizational system that will help get it organized going forward. As an instance, you can get a sectioned drawer organizer tray, some make-up or ice cube trays, or small containers with snap-on lids to effectively keep your things in an orderly fashion. You can look for these inexpensive items at discount stores or home stores just about anywhere. Just make sure to measure your drawer and the organizers exactly to see to it that it is a good fit.

5.   Organize

And now, you’re finally ready to sort the items you prefer to keep into the trays or containers in your junk drawer. Providing where your junk drawer is located in the house, try to keep only items that are useful for that specified room. For instance, you may keep a notepad, pens or pencils, scissors, and a coupon or receipt book in a kitchen junk drawer. In the same token, junk drawers in other rooms should hold specific, habitually used items that don’t belong anywhere else.

A messy junk drawer can be real trouble. But on the flip side, taking advantage of these easy tips, you can immediately tame that junk drawer back into a beautifully organized section.
